CCleaner, TFC, MyDefrag : Disk maintenance

A few free tools to clean up and speed up your harddisk (and PC). Download links:

CCleaner
TFC
MyDefrag

CCleaner

CCleaner cleans up all kinds of temporary files. You can pick what should be cleaned and what not. The default selected options are fine, but deselect passwords for your browser. Most options are pretty self-explanatory.

TFC

TFC cleans up locked temporary files that CCleaner cannot access. Before you run this, first close all your programs and prepare for a reboot (restart). TFC will close all unnecessary services and requires a reboot in most cases. There are no options, just run it.

MyDefrag

MyDefrag is a powerful disk defragmenter. It moves data blocks belonging to single files together and it puts important system files at the beginning of your hard disk. This speeds up booting and working with Windows.

When you start it (there may be an error notification, ignore it, it's a bug) you'll have some scripts. "Daily", "Weekly", "Monthly", and then options for the system disk and data disk. (The screenshot is an older version)
- Pick "System Disk Monthly" and select your C:. Let it run, i.e. through the night.
- The next day run "Data Disk Monthly" and select i.e. the D: partition (if you have it). Again, let it run.

The first time you run these scripts it may take some time. Later these scripts will run faster. You can exit the tool at any time if you want to.

If you run these three tools every few months you'll keep your PC fresh.
